I upgraded yesterday to 1.6.  I never left the CP during the upgrade so this might not have come up yesterday, but this morning I have been unable to log in to it.

I am able to log in to the site from the front end, but the moment I go to the CP link, it aks for my username/password.

After you enter your username/password, what happens?  Blank screen?  Does it just keep asking?

Here’s a few things to try.
    1) clear your browsers cache and cookies.
    2) clear your site cache via ftp
    3) before you upgraded, did you have any third party modules or extensions running?

Cleared caches, cookies, and browsing history.

I didn’t have any third party modules or extensions.

Tried again to login after clearing out everything.  No luck.

It stays on the login panel.  It doesn’t give me a message, just resets to blank to enter info again.

I also checked to make sure it was listed as a safe site in my privacy settings.

Do you have direct access to your database via PHPmyAdmin, or something else like that?  If so, could you go into the table exp_sites and look for the field site_system_preferences.  If you look at that data, it might look intimidating, but all it really is, is the site preferences.  In amongst all that you’ll see something that says

    "admin_session_type";s:1:

That s:1 might also be s:2.  If it is anything other then s:1, could you make it s:1 for me?  What we are doing is setting the control panel to allow login with cookies only, and not sessions.

Give that a shot and let me know what happens.

Progress.  It was set to sessions so I changed it to cookies.

Now I get something interesting… a page of errors.  The two errors are:

Notice: unserialize(): Error at offset 1024 of 3498 bytes in /**removed**/core/core.prefs.php on line 128

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /**removed**/core/core.prefs.php:128) in
    /**removed**/core/core.functions.php on line 724

    I **removed** the fun bits.

It repeats the second error 6 times, with the final error:

Warning: Cannot modify header information - headers already sent by (output started at /**removed**/core/core.prefs.php:128) in
    /**removed**/core/core.functions.php on line 296

Have you tried reuploading the two files mentioned in the error messages?

To confirm, you changed it to S:1?

Yes, I changed to S:1.  That caused the errors to appear, rather than nothing happening.

I just (first deleting) uploaded the two files:
    core.functions.php
    core.prefs.php

    No change.

FYI, I played around with the debug settings, trying 0 and 1.  Those cause the username/password screen to appear again.  Leaving it set at “2” causes the errors, but no CP.

I was able to get past it by setting multiple_sites in the config file to “n.”

I have almost exactly, the same problem.

Notice: unserialize() [function.unserialize]: Error at offset 840 of 3061 bytes in /location reference/core.prefs.php on line 128

I also notice that it’s not loading the CSS, so the logon screen looks “unstyled”

I installed like the instructions stated.

I thought it was just me, but the settings on the System Preferences pages did a disappearing act on me, too, Arbinshire.  This was probably something I did (stupid) while experimenting with the multiple sites manager, but turning that off (in the config file), logging on, reinputting the settings on the preferences page, and then turning MSM back on, seemed to solve it.

Hmmm.. Looking back, I think my issue is similiar, but different than yours. I can’t even get past the logon screen, and the logon screen is completely unstyled.

Arbinshire, was this an upgrade or a clean install?  If it was a clean install, could I ask you to re-download the package, delete everything and try again?  A new build was released that may address your issues.

Arbinshire, have you double checked the path to your Themes folder? Are you using the default site theme?
