I have a client who wants to use the forum, but needs more editorial control. Is there a way to have “pending” forum posts? Perhaps post to a hidden forum (how?), and have an Admin move it once it’s been reviewed? For some specific reason, they’d rather not use the comments module. Any ideas?

If you’re referring to the 50+ feature requests that were incorporated into 1.6, then yes, this was not one of them.  To be fair, this is not a highly asked for feature, and could be accomplished with some extensions if a site really needed it immediately.

Derek, care to elaborate? Which hook would we use, and to accomplish what exactly?

There are many different approaches, but you would probably want a module / extension combo (since modules can have actions).  I’d probably create a table to hold the id’s of submitted posts that have not yet been approved.  A new entry submission would trigger an email to the moderators, containing a link to actions to either delete or approve the post.  If deleted, the row is removed from your table and the post is deleted from exp_posts, post counts and stats adjusted, etc.  If approved, simply remove the row from your table.  In the forum thread rows, I’d do one query at the start, and cache it, so it’s only one query per page load, of all unapproved posts.  If one of the post id’s being output is in the unapproved posts array, skip that row and continue to the next row.

20 or so years ago, I used to design and develop wireless architecture and hardware for the Defense Department and, even back then, software left me a little cold .. and that was before I had to get out of that field because continued exposure to RF caused permanent brain damage ... fried brains can be acquired in a number of ways ... and one is by sitting in a shielded room a mile underground testing high power microwave transmitters.

In the original post, you asked for reasons why we would like a FR and I gave my detailed reasons; the thread went cold.

I would switch to an EE forum in a flash if it could be made to do what I require .. moderate posts BEFORE they appear. I’ve purchased a license but I cannot get it to do what I outlined in the original thread which started 12 months ago.

Now .. I can make a Klystron cook all of the meat in a butcher’s shop window .. (and even fry police radar speed guns from 10 miles away)... but I haven’t got a clue about how to even start writing a module that will do what you suggest ..

The Poms called them ‘boffins’; colloquialism seems to take on different meanings as it gets translated between different flavours of English.

With a Masters in Electronics Engineering, my categorisation as ‘stuffer’ had a few even more ‘colourful’ words added.

I’ve got a friend who is a US trained chiropractor and he got into a bit of trouble because he asked a female client to park her ‘fanny’ on the edge of the couch; the Australian equivalent is ‘bum’.

However, it appears another vote has been added to the FR .. just as mine was another vote to an existing FR

tulkul - along with that, I got laughed at by my co-workers when I lived and worked in Australia - I asked them the best route (and pronounced as a New Yorker - root) to another location.  Root also has some very colorful meanings.

I still ask people if they want to put things in the “boot” in the car.

I would definitely put a strong vote behind this proposal for adding editorial workflow.

Many uses I am planning for EE would need this.  For a model of it, Plone may be a good start.

All community endeavours need some judgement and coaching, for one way to look at it.

For another topic, the language discussion gives a good smile.  Yes, you should watch where you use the word ‘fanny’ outside the US.  It’s a pretty female concept in Britain and related… 😉

After a more careful reading through the prior feature request thread as well as this one, I realised that what I am asking for is slightly different, but think the thought can help.

These requests for editorial review ability are for forum postings, and that one good place to have them, it’s sure.

What I had in mind myself is editorial review on *weblog* postings.  This is so a site can allow article contributors, but with a step where there is some supervision.  It’s commonly called an ‘editorial workflow’.

Is this an appropriate place to ask for it, since we have architects in attendance?  Or should I cross-post this as a somewhat linked feature request?

Clive, have you looked at custom statuses?  There’s a note on the bottom of the page giving a very basic example of an editorial workflow.

I just did read about custom status, carefully on the part about how it can interact with restricted membership groups, and this appears able to do just what I want.

I’ll try it and come back.
