I’m one of those idiots who knows just enough to be dangerous. I have never worked in EE from the developer side, but thought I could change the name of a field in my template without creating a problem. I lost visibility of several other content fields on the live site. My best guess as to the source is that when I clicked Update, there was a checkbox for Save as File that was checked. Any possibility my content will again appear if I uncheck this box and Update (I changed the field name back to original)?
