I’d like to change my index template from “blog” to “site” and my “comments” template to “article” or “post” or “content” or anything other than the nonsensical “comments” so the url’s look less “bloggy.”  I have a lot of content on the site and I’m weary of breaking links or any other possible pitfalls.  Any advice on what to check/change before I change the name?  Any advice is greatly appreciated.

So you got a working site and want to change the urls? Just rename the respective template groups (from “blog” to “site” in your case) and update the navigation.

By the way: it’s impossible for us to tell you what else to look out for without detailed information about your website.

    and update the navigation..

Meaning, you’ll have to run through all your templates, find any links that use the old names and replace them with the new names. These might be in main navigation, sidebar navigation, linked titles, etc. There is a ‘find & replace’ option to do this across all templates if you are comfy doing that.
