Update Wizard 2.8.1 to 2.9.0 hangs and doesn't complete

    I have been trying to upgrade EE 2.8.1 to 2.9.0 but the Update Wizard just loads for a very very long time and then gives a 404 error. I tried this a few times.

    When I remove the “installer” directory and go to CP it says “2.9.0” at the bottom, but it also says:

    Your ExpressionEngine installation’s version (2.8.1) is not consistent with the reported version (2.9.0). Please update your installation of ExpressionEngine again.

    Has anyone else experienced this? How can I get the Update Wizard to finish completely?

    I would advise you to upload your EE again as it maybe missing some file or a file has some corruption. I have had this happen and the reupload cleared my problem.

    This issue is resolved and I was able to upgrade to 2.9.

    After buying a support package from Ellislab for $49 I was able to create a support ticket and get help. It turned out we had a very large “exp_search_log” table and the installer froze on converting this table. I emptied the table, reran the install wizard and it was done in seconds.

    It is unfortunate that the install wizard cannot handle large tables like this. It should check for this and work around it or give an error message. This would have saved me $49 and a lot of time.
