FWIW, I’ve been seeing a few other forums getting flooded with the same kind of spam. So it’s affecting other forum software as well.

I don’t really post or spend too much time on this forum either, but I’d be willing to lend a hand helping out as well if it’s going to keep the community going strong.

Why not groupsource the spam detection? Put a “report as spam” button up with the “report” and “ignore” buttons. Then when a level of detection is reached (say 3 or 4 or ??? of us report a post as spam), a post is dropped into moderation.

My offer still stands if EllisLab are happy for community moderation?

I have been delighted to see what seems like a stronger focus for EE recently, it would be nice if we could rebuild what was once a vibrant community here in the forums - but we need rid of the spam to pave the way.

Classic - the reply #17 above WinkingFrog is a spammer discussing spam in a thread about stopping the spammers.

    Who says Post-Modernism is dead?

Slightly confused Okapi? Would you kindly explain why you would class me as a spammer?

Winking Frog is not spamming he is offering his services to help maintain the forums.

Think about it do you have any idea how many spammers I flag on here almost everyday?

Oops, my bad! I just re-read the message and it’s aimed towards reply #17 which I can see is the post previous to mine, which is indeed a rather obvious spammer! 😊

Sorry Okapi, I completely missed that first time round - please accept my apologies.

Yeah, I meant #17 - didn’t want to give them the dignity of describing or naming them so I meant the one above WinkingFrog’s….apologies for confusion!

WinkingFrog I’ll probably still take you up on it, but we’ve been making some adjustments to our spam filters and are testing how well they’re doing before we add to anyone’s workload. Our modifications have increased our successful blocking from 15,000 spam posts a month to 20,000.

No problem Derek, it’s a genuine offer so feel free.

Good news on the filters so far, it’s never an easy battle!
