So before I dig deep into learning EE2. I’m curious whats possible on this system without basically having to turn it into a custom solution.
For example:
Could you make a giphy.com or wallbase.cc clones?
- Lots of images in categories that are searchable via tags
- User accounts where people can view their favorite images.
- Sort images by favorites, view count, other parameters
Can EE build these type of sites or are you better off making a custom solution from scratch?

Yup this is all possible with EE. You might want to checkout http://devot-ee.com/ to see what modules might help you. In particular the User module will help with creating user accounts and Channel Images for managing the images. Also my module Reefine might help you with filtering. I’m not sure how you would do view count, you would need to find an add-on or build one yourself to do that.

For tracking views, if you have a template to view an image individually (directlink like: http://giphy.com/gifs/AmZ1oT1V74J1u/) you can track that page using the built in view tracking:

But it does have a bit of a performance hit if you are getting large volumes of traffic.
