Rich Text Area / RTE not add <p></p> tags

Is there anyway to tell RTE to not add automatically to template out put

i.e this code in template
opener not RTE and main_article is RTE
```
{opener} {main_article}
```
will output
```
{opener}{main_article}
```
Which messed up the design but I want client to use RTE in Control Panel

I just want to have RTE tags I use in template to not be automatically wrapped in p tag

I think this was due to a patch I applied but all ok since 2.7
