I would like to show all entries that are in a particular category and NOT in another category. I’ve got a set of categories and an additional category called “Featured”. On a certain category page, I’d like to show the featured items at the top and then the “unfeatured” items below.

So I’d like to do something like {exp:channel:entries category="23not 24"}{/exp:channel:categories}. Is this possible?

Would the use of a statuses versus a category better suit this case?

Then you could do an entry loop with status=“featured” and only those with that status would be displayed, regardless of other factors like the category they belong to etc..

In this case status would not work, we use the Better Workflow plugin so the status is going to change from draft to open etc. via the workflow plugin. The status field always seems to work better for managing the workflow rather than for use as metadata.
