In order to have a safe space in which to upgrade from EE1 to EE2, I asked my hosts to create a copy of my current database - pmh4551a - and to create a copy of my entire HTML directory, including the EE files.

I assumed that once this was done, I could go into my ‘safe’ directory, download config.php, then simply change the name of the database to the new database name - pmh4551c - and upload it again and everything would be working. But what I get is this error message:

    MySQL ERROR:

    Error Number: 1146

    Description: Table ‘pmh4551c.exp_sites’ doesn’t exist

Query: SELECT es.* FROM exp_sites AS es WHERE es.site_id = ‘1’

Any ideas on what I’ve done wrong? I’m running EE1.7.1.

Well, you could put a copy of phpMyAdmin on your site, and verify that your host duped the database properly. They may not have properly assigned the current db_user to the new install, or mangled the password.

When you try and do an upgrade this way, it is best to have your host (or do it yourself if you can) create a subdomain to replicate your installation to. If this is what your host did, then you would have to clean up file paths in all the various locations to point to the new subdomain.

You didn’t mention when/where you were getting the error. Is this when you try to access the index.php file in the new install? Or when you try and login? When you try to upgrade?

Doh! Turns out the hosts had created a new database, but hadn’t copied the contents of the old one across. No wonder it didn’t work.

Thanks for the tips on paths, etc, though - good to know.
