I have gone through the process a few times already and have ended up with the same issues each time.  Here’s the steps I took (along with following the upgrade steps noted on the EE website):
    1. Backed up EE 1.7.3 database + all my site’s files.
    2. Made duplicate folders on the site so I could switch back easier.
      ie: system_EE1…. themes_EE1… images_EE1… etc.
    3. Uploaded EE 2.5.5
    4. Copied over the config file(s) as noted in the instructions.
    5. Started the updater.

First issue encountered was the template issue.  I can’t find an example of a “flat” file… so I tried is once by leaving the .php files EE1 creates.  ERRORs.  Then I tried updating the templates and putting them up as html files (as pre my other EE2 sites).  ERRORs again.
So I tried by telling the updater to ignore the template files.  It seemed to be okay with that and kept the upgrade process going.
It then told me to remove the Installer folder.  I did that.  Then I clicked on the Control Panel link.
What I got was the Login page… but the style sheet was missing?
I checked out the EE image link at the top of that page (the image was “missing” and it gave me a URL that pointed not to the theme folder but to the main folder (one folder back from that).
    So, instead of:  /themes/cp_themes/....
    I was seeing:  /cp_themes?....
I tried putting a copy of the cp_themes in that directory and the image and stuff appeared…
    BUT
    I COULD NOT LOGIN.
    ?
It seems that my super admin name/password was not working.

I tried this all over a couple more times.
    Same issue.
    Any ideas?

    thanks

I just tried this Forum thread…
    That didn’t change anything.

It’s strange that, once it’s done updating (without the templates…. I would add those later), the login screen isn’t looking for the THEMES folder/directory.
Is something amiss in the database??

FYI: I have a Discussion FORUM module on this site… but that shouldn’t cause these woes.

    Help?
    Soon?

    thanks.

Just did a clean install of 2.5.5, image loads on the login screen but not css. Haven’t come across this problem before after doing multiple EE installs.

    Look forward to a response.

There seems to be something wrong with doing a clean install of 2.5.5. How we got around the problem was by doing an instal of an older verson we had lying around, 2.5.1. This work no problems at all, then we upgraded it to 2.5.5

    Hope that helps.

Hmm.  I’ll try updating with an older version later this week.  I actually keep copies of each version just in case… all the way back to 2.1.3.
I’ll post later wether that worked or not.

So EE 2.6.0 just came out.
So I decided to try that… since they mention upgrading from EE 1.x and having Theme file issues.
    Went through the whole process.
Same problem.  No link to the themes.  Probably something more as well but, seeing as I can’t get past the “Login page”, I’ll never know (See attached image).

I checked my server using the server wizard.  All looks good.
I’ll have to try again tomorrow with an older version of EE 2.x to upgrade to… ?

I wonder if any EE tech know what might be the problem or would like to take a look?

    thanks

Well… tried updating with EE 2.1.3
    Exact same problem.

One more thing I can think of before I just tell the client to stick to 1.7.3… no need to give EE any more money because we can’t get this done by ourselves.

Well…. I’m getting extremely miffed here.
I tried again tonight.  SAME PROBLEM.
On top of all that… I am STILL WAITING for someone from EE to suggest an answer??

I don’t understand.  I have purchased for clients around 25-30 EE Licenses…. and, yet, these questions get NO feedback from them?
Are we all expected to pay the $50/month just to get one answer back??
Why can’t we get any help here??
I may get ONE question a year.  ONE.  Check how many licenses I have and then look at how many questions I have asked.

PLEASE HELP OUT HERE ?!?  This is extremely frustrating.  It’s been a week of trying ... of testing… of hoping someone at EE would actually respond with…. something… anything.

Anyone there anymore??  I NEED SOME HELP!
