How mission-critical to clear cache when updating EE?

    I want to move and update an old EE2 site (v2.0.2pb01). The order doesn’t matter to me, but the issue is that the control panel is unresponsive. I can only access the pages tab and my account details, but that’s about it. I cannot for example access the admin or tools area, and so I cannot clear the cache. I figure that maybe if I update first that this might be solved, but it means I would have to do it without clearing the cache.

    So my question is, how mission-critical is it to clear the cache before updating? Or is there a way to access the tools area directly with a URL?

    I am also greeted with this message:

    “An unexpected error occurred attempting to download the current ExpressionEngine version number. Please visit your Download Account to verify you are on the current version. If this error persists, please contact your system administrator.”

    (By the way, I’m not able to close this message).

    In the odd event anyone else ever has this issue, I figured how to edit the URL to access different areas of the admin. In the case of the clear cache tool, I replaced

    C=homepage

    with

    C=tools_data&M=clear_caching
