A EE (with Brilliant Retail) site got hacked. I backed up the database and deleted all EE and BR files from the server. I’m reinstalling EE + BR and when I get to the final install screen, I get the warning that the previous installation has been detected and if I install, all database content will be wiped. Given that I have the database backed up and can import it later - can I go ahead and do a fresh install, then import the database? The goal is to restore the site, not start fresh. What’s the best strategy here?

just go ahead and install the fresh version, and install your add-ons to their previous state. Then using MySQL or your db manager, rename your fresh database to something other than it is, create a new database and give it the proper name and user privs and import all your data to it.

Sounds like you were on the right track. Did it work out for your?

And how did your install get hacked? Anything the rest of us should be aware of?

If i were you, i would contact Ellislab with all info available so that they could point out the possible hole in their end…or then it has been on that 3rd party add-on…

Update - the site is hosted at Go Daddy. After installing, I realized Go Daddy has a simple Database Restore function. I ran that and my site was restored, exactly as I’d hoped.
