Moving EE 1.7.1 to local server to test migration to EE 2, but can't login to CP

I can’t login to my EE 1.7.1 CP after moving my files and database to a localhost server in preparation for a migration to EE 2. I’d like to test the update locally and id any issues before doing it on the live, public server. (I’ve had this site since early pmachine days and have drug it along into the future, but been reluctant to move to EE2 since I have a large photo gallery in EE1.)

I’ve moved the files and the data base, and edited the config.php file for the new database server and login. When I try to login to the CP, I just get sent back to the login page. I’ve looked this up on this support forum and not found a solution. I don’t think it is cookie related as I try with multiple browsers with no luck.

It could be related to db access. Maybe I don’t have access permission on some files/folders right?

I found instructions on moving an EE2 site to a new server, but can’t find the equivalent for EE1.

Also, if I try to load the web site homepage I get: “You have exceeded the allowed page load frequency. Take a bit more time on each page.” So, that might also be a hint to what my problem is.

I am using MAMP for a local server.

I’ve tried several things to remedy this, including installing a “virgin” 1.7.3 on my localhost, then importing my EE data base and modifying the 1.7.3 files (path, config, etc) to match the live installation. No luck. I even tried staying logged into the CP after the virgin install to see if I could get access to the CP after the db import. Nope.

So, I am stuck. I’d really like to do a trial run on the upgrade to EE2 because I know there will be many issues that I’ll need to fix. I wonder what will happen to the photo gallery, for example. I have some extensions that are not going to work, etc. I don’t want to risk learning all that I need to do on the live site. And, now I’m scared that I might not even be able to log into the EE2 CP after the upgrade…

    Any ideas are welcomed!

I’ve now moved this site to another Enginehosting’s site under a different domain. Followed all instructions on moving to a new server, and I’m having the same problem with not being able to log into the CP. At least now I can view the site as a user, but cannot login to the site or the CP. So, some progress, but I still can’t get to the CP to finish the migration.

I’d really like to move this site to EE2, but it has so much legacy code and third party plugins, etc that I want to test the migration offline first. I am just a hobbyist who has had a blog site since the very, very early days of pmachine (when Rick used to do support himself), and I am really disappointed that no one is able to help me with this problem. I don’t think I can afford the paid support, so am reaching out with yet another plea for someone to help me figure out why I can’t migrate the EE 1.7.1 site to a new server.

    Thanks.

    Hi Rick,
I’ve had this issue before and there were a number of config settings that worked for me, but I’m also failing to dig up what those were. I can only suggest posting your issue on Stack Exchange since the community seems to have shifted there. Hopefully someone over there can help you out.
