So when I try to save the template as a text file through EE, I get the error message “unable to save your template as a text file.”  But if I create a .group folder through the FTP client, it shows up just fine in the template manager.  I can even change the code, upload it, and see the changes in the template manager.  But for whatever reason I can’t save changes to a text file through EE.

    What gives?

Have you tried setting the permissions on the templates directory to 777?
I’ve had similar issues from time to time with saving template files, my solution is to delete all the template files and directories on the server after first making sure that my local files are the version I want- then I sync the templates. After that I can upload my local version of the templates and everything seems to work right. I think it has something to do with the author of the file- EE needs to be the “creator” of the files in certain server environments…
I’ve also noticed similar issues when I create a template file before creating the template in EE- as long as I create the template in the template manager first, making sure to check “Save Template as File” I can do whatever I want about the file.
    Hope that helps some-

    Hello,

I faced the same problem, when I moved my working files from localhost to production server.

    These checks might help:

    1. If you have moved your installation from development machine to server, check if you have followed the following steps enlisted at
    http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide//operations/moving.html

    2. Tools > Data > Clear Caching > “Page (template) cache files”

    3. Design > Templates > Template Manager > Synchronize Templates

    4. Change the file permissions of all the template files to 666

    5. Change the folder permission of “system/expressionengine/templates” to 777

    Hope this helps.
