We’ve upgraded to 2.5.3 and all file fields have disappeared.

Found a few threads with folks with similar experiences, but, nothing that clearly resolves the issue. Any clues where to begin troubleshooting?

    EDIT/UPDATE for more info:

One obvious point of the potential problem, after the upgrade, went to the “file” module and it showed as not being installed, so, we clicked the “install” option.

    Further update…

We’ve upgraded multiple times, getting closer to success. The file images are now appearing, BUT we’re experiencing two issues:

#1. the “file” module is still showing as uninstalled. We are extremely hesitant to “install” this module, as it has previously caused all file fields for all content to disappear. It’s probable that previous re-installations of the file module occurred before we had ‘synced’ all files. Was it possible that the failure to sync before re-installing the module was what caused the content to disappear? Or is it a different issue? Keep in mind that installing the module didn’t just cause images to not render - it’s that the fields were no longer there, if you went to edit in the CMS the custom field that would have the image content simply would no longer even be there.

#2. We’re also experiencing a control panel issue. Below the content in an edit/publish screen, there’s a file upload field appended below the global footer. It looks like this:

    http://img560.imageshack.us/img560/9299/captureeee.png

It seems there was another thread that had the same issue but the resolution there is not evident: http://ellislab.com/forums/viewthread/224865/ ... we’ve tried re-uploading fresh installs of the ‘themes’ folder and that didn’t fix the problem.

(update 11/12 12:42pm ET - If anyone with Expression Engine has tried to contact us directly, please re-send any emails? We’ve just updated the email address on this account profile to go to an active address.

We’re still experiencing issues 1 and 2 listed above. Apologies if the scenario is unclear, but our CMS is currently unable to post content with images.)

    Hello ideadigital,

I am sorry to hear you are running into these issues.

For issue one, it sounds like you just needed to a Sync Files. I do not think the images were actually wiped out. Go ahead and install the file module and then sync. Go ahead and make another backup just to make sure.

For the second issue, are you using any custom themes or any Add-ons that need to be updated? You might also check that the paths are still correct in the Control Panel under Admin—>General Configuration.

    I hope this helps!

    Cheers,

    Shane-

Thanks for the help. We’re going to take the steps you suggested.

However, we’ve been made aware of new information: An unreported issue with the file upload was actually occurring before the attempted EE software upgrade. So this problem might be entirely independent of the upgrade.

If we sync files and re-install the file module as suggested, and we still run into issues with the file uploader, do you recommend rolling back to the previous version (which evidently had the same or similar problem), or would it be easier for you guys to help us troubleshoot by being on the latest version of EE?

    Thanks again.

We re-installed the file module again, and once again, it made all images disappear. Keep in mind, this isn’t just the images not-rendering on the page (like when you forget to sync files), but when you go to the individual content entries, the custom file field is completely gone.

We did find one more clue during this process, though. After re-installing the file module, we tried to use the file manager, and got this result:

The menu that in a normal 2.5.3 installation has this pattern:
content > files > file manager

But when we upgrade (from 2.1.1 to 2.5.3), it renders like this:
content > file manager > nav file manager

And if you choose “nav file manager” it gives PHP errors like this:

    A PHP Error was encountered
    Severity: Notice
    Message: Undefined index: cat_group
    Filename: cp/content_files.php
    Line Number: 567

We’ve rolled back to 2.1.1. We’d eventually like to upgrade to 2.5.3, but won’t attempt doing it again until we have a much clearer expectation of how we might be able to fix this issue.

    Hey there ideadigital,

I have not seen this error before. This is really odd.

When you upgrade, are you disabling all the Add-Ons?

Do you have a development environment or a second server we could use? I can run through the update for you and see what I can determine. To do that I would need to send you a log in request.

    Please let me know!

    Cheers,

No, we’re not disabling any extensions nor removing any modules that are installed.

Give us a few days to set up a development environment for you to use. Really appreciate you guys willing to take a look. I’ll let you know when we’ve got the new environment set up.
