Are you hosted with EngineHosting, by any chance? We are, and after their downtime today we’re seeing exactly the same thing.

For us it seems like session data isn’t getting written to the database for some reason. No records in exp_sessions which in my experience is a little odd.
Ours is a MSM site and I managed to get one of them changed to using only cookies, rather than cookies and sessions, and that ~seems~ to have fixed the problem. I’ve not been able to get that setting changes on the other sites though. I keep getting hit with a login screen when I try to save the setting.

Well I put a bandaid on our site for now.
In config.php I added this line:
$conf[‘admin_session_type’] = ‘c’;
which over-rides the database setting and forces the control panel to use Cookies only, rather than Cookies and Sessions. That seems to have gotten us back up and running though I’d still like to fix this properly.

Hey there LHToday,
Welcome to the forums!!
Can you tell me a bit more about your installation? What version is it?
Can you add the following to your config.php file for me and see if that helps?
$config['admin_session_type'] = "c";
$config['user_session_type'] = "c";
$config['require_ip_for_login'] = "n";
$config['require_ip_for_posting'] = "n";
$config['secure_forms'] = "n";
Thank you,

Hi Shane,
I’m LHToday’s tech person. We are on Engine Hosting just like Peter Smith, so I guess the problem had something to do with all their trouble last week. They are on EE 1.7.1 (due to reliance on the EE1 Photo Gallery).
I added the line that Peter suggested, (thanks Peter!)
$config['admin_session_type'] = "c";
and that seems to have helped. In some browsers it didn’t work but LHToday was able to get in using other browsers they hadn’t used before. I also suggested clearing out their cookies.
Would you recommend adding the other lines as well?
Let me know, thanks!

Hey oliversitedesign,
I am glad you were able to work through it.
The setting for cookies is good enough. The others are to rule out issues, so they can be left alone.
Is there anything else I can help you with?
Cheers,
