I am new to webdesign. I have the basics down and a general understanding of design, but overall am a little lost. To use expression engine, do users have to purchase their domain names and host the website through another site?

Hi hoekzema,
ExpressionEngine is software that runs on a web server, so you will need to find a web host and install ExpressionEngine on your server. (Nexcess is a fantastic web host, and they’ve even got special ExpressionEngine-tuned web packages coming soon!)
In terms of using ExpressionEngine, this getting started video should give you some good pointers.
After looking at all that, what other questions can I help you with?
