Is there a way to have all entries in a particular channel automatically be tied/assigned to a particular category? So even when a new entry is created, that category is automatically checked?

Yes, you can create a default category assignment for the channel.

    Perfect- Thanks John.

Any idea is we could make Parent Categories unelectable? So lets say I have categories of Desktop, Mobile and Server and for UX reason, I have all of them set with a parent category of Software. However, I dont want “Software” to be selectable- rather just one of the sub categories to be selectable.

It’s possible there’s an add-on for that on Devot-ee, but I’ve not yet encountered a way that permits you to prevent the parent from being selected.  You can set the parent category to not be auto-assigned by default, but I’ve not seen anything to prevent it from being selected at all. But that’s not to say an extension to provide that functionality doesn’t exist - there are many category-related add-ons for EE - hard to keep track of them all.

Yep- looking at that. What is not looking that great is the categories section which is like one tall box with lots of space next to it. Any add-on yuo know of that converts categories to a dual pane scrollable option- kinda like Playa?

Not quite like that (that I’ve seen anyway) but there is one called Category field that sound like it might help you deliver a more streamlined category experience. It’s not one I’ve ever used though.
