On the backend, is it possible to have the entry input interface a bit like wordpress where you have two column split (75-25 or 80-20) in which you could organize the fields?

Sort of. You can use publish layouts to organize the entry screen and resize/resort how the fields are displayed. Not exactly the same thing as what wordpress does - in some ways, it’s even more powerful.  And of course publish layouts is just in the control panel.  If you recreate your entry forms on the front end (behind login, etc) with Safecracker, you can lay out the entry fields any way you like.
