Problems moving server

I’m running into problems trying to move 1.7.3 EE website to a new server. I’m also trying to change the domain name to another name.  I followed all the directions (deleting cache, changing config files, etc.), but I’m still having problems.  Strangely, all the pages show up blank, but when I load up the control panel URL, I’m able to get that to load. Only problem then is that the username/password doesn’t work for my admin account.

Basically, in addition to following the directions for the site migration, I exported the old database, changed all the paths and domain name to the new paths and domains, and then uploaded that to a new database that resides on the new server.  No dice, however.

    Any idea what’s going wrong?

Similar experience. I spent WEEKS trying to resolve it.

You know what file I overlooked?
    .htaccess

I was using that to hide the index.php in the URL. Check yours.
Let me know if that was it.

    Hello eclectiv,

I am sorry to hear you are running into these snags.

I just want to make that you were using the moving servers guide.

On the new server, have you verified that your DB connection credentials are still valid? Being on a new server, if any of the settings are off you will not be able to login to the Control Panel. Can you setup a simple connection in a php file and test?

Please let me know how that goes. That will tell us a lot and give me direction on where to go next.

    Thank you!

    Hi Shane,

I basically followed those directions, although the site I’m moving is EE version 1.7.3 site rather than a EE version 2.  I’m pretty sure the DB connection credentials are all valid because when I go to the control panel page, I get this:

Script executed in 0.0492 seconds   5 SQL queries used
    Build:  20120606

So at this point, none of the actual web pages load.  And when I go to the control panel login page, the username/password doesn’t work.  Not sure if this helps, but the CSS for the control panel login page seems to be broken as well.

    Hey clectiv,

Hmmmm. So you can try uploading the themes folder again. That should correct the CSS for the Control Panel. Or make sure perms are correct.

To be honest, it sounds like the move did not go well. I would start over and try again. Make sure paths and perms are exact. That will really help!

You might also consider installing ExpressionEngine on the new server and then importing the DB.

Please let me know how that goes.

    Cheers,

Reuploading the themes folder didn’t work. I’ve actually tried to move the site and another EE V1 site just like this one a few times to the new server, but have had the same issue crop up every time.  I know it’s not the server set up as well because I’ve moved over 5 other EE V1 sites to the same server and had no problems.

What are perms? Is there a way for me to change those without accessing the control panel? Right now, I can only modify the actual EE files on the server because the control panel username/password doesn’t work.

    perms == permissions

    Permissions are all correctly set.

    Hey eclectiv,

At this point I would install ExpressionEngine on this destination server and import your settings. If the server is not the issue, then it’s the install and the move is flushing that out.

Is that a plan you can try?

    Thank you,

Can you explain what you mean by that?  Basically, install EE to the new destination and manually set all the settings and manually add every entry?  Or some hybrid in between that makes this less painful?

    Hey there eclectiv,

Ouch! That would be horrible. No, you can export your database and then import your database on the new install.

Does that makes sense? It does not always work, but you are having so many issues with the server move that it might be worth it.

I would also suggest that you consider hiring a Pro Network professional to help you with the server move. Just a thought!

    Cheers,

So if I’m understanding correctly, you’re recommending that I upload all the new EE files and change the new config file to point to the new database which has the current database ported in?

Rather than, that is, how I’ve currently transitioned things whereby I have the current EE web files uploaded and the new database which has the current database ported in. Is that correct?

I’ve transitioned numerous EE sites before without any problems, so I’m not sure why I’m having issues in this particular case.

    Hey eclectiv,

This is what I am thinking.

Install 2.5.3 on the new server.
Export your Database from the old server and import data into the new database. Just getting your content.

    That should simplify things greatly.

I am not sure what it is about this install either. The move documentation usually helps.

Are you sure the server is compatible with 2.5.3? Did you run the Server Wizard?

    Thank you,

My server is compatible with 2.5.3 I’m just not sure how to go about this. If I install 2.5.3 fresh and then enter my database configurations during the install process on the EE set up wizard page, it gives me a warning saying that the database is not empty and that it’s going to erase everything.  So I’m not sure how to bring a 1.7.3 into a fresh 2.5.3 site like you’re recommending.  Can you give me specific step by steps?
