    Hello,

The front end of my 1.6.8 site was working fine but we noticed a couple weeks ago that the admin backend gave us a white screen after we logged in at the admin login screen.  We tried to enable error reporting the config file without luck.

Today I tried to upgrade to 1.7.3.  The update wizard worked through all versions until going from 1.7.2 to 1.7.3, when this error happened:

Error: The following error was encountered
    MySQL ERROR:

    Error Number: 1054

Description: Unknown column 'ip_address' in 'exp_mailing_list'

Query: ALTER TABLE `exp_mailing_list` CHANGE `ip_address` `ip_address` VARCHAR(45) NOT NULL

What should we do to get this all fixed?

UPDATE: I ran this sql query and the update worked so we are on 1.7.3 now:

alter table exp_mailing_list add ip_address varchar(45) not null

That didn’t fix the white screen problem.  It also introduced a second problem with my templates.

    1. After logging in at the admin screen, the screen is blank and the url is something like:

    my_url/system/index.php?S=dc6b8f263c6e5be705870cc793cdd80dfaca605f

    2. My front end now says things like:

ERROR The following tag has a syntax error: {exp:user:edit}.  Please correct the syntax in your template.

    Hello jonsnetwork,

I am sorry to hear you are running into these issue. Let’s see what we can do.

Jumping to the most recent update, it looks like the Add-On User (solspace) is being celled out. Did you update User yet? With the newer version of ExpressionEngine all the Add-Ons need to be updated.

Can you check that out and let me know?

    Thank you!

    Hi Shane,

I’m helping Jon out—I built the site out initially.

We upgraded User but no help. I’ve gone into the database and removed it from exp_modules as we can’t get to the Modules screen—it’s among those that are blank. No change.

The only cpanel screens that aren’t blank are Publish, Publish/Edit screen, Communicate and Category Management and its subscreens.

Well, turns out the culprit was the Nested Weblogs plugin from back in the day by Mark Huot. Screens are back now.

    Hey Adam,

Awesome! Glad that you found the resolution! Nice work.

Is there anything else I can help with?

    Cheers,

alter table exp_mailing_list add ip_address varchar(45) not null

That just saved my bacon on the update of an OLD EE site that’s not quite ready for the move to v2.x…. soon we hope, but this is great to be able to keep them where they are at for a bit longer.

Big thanks to jonsnetwork for the detailed post.

... and Share for leaving this post open so I could thank him!
