Has anyone had a chance to try out both? What gave you the best experience?
Are there any other candidates that deserve their hat in the ring?

I have not tried Freeform Pro yet. However, I am digging Forms by DevDemon. I bought the developer license which enables me to pass saving to my customers. It works well “out of the box”. And the default template allows me to integrate a decent looking form into my page template in minutes. I’ve been very happy with it. At $55 it’s half the cost of Freeform Pro, which is enticing as well.
At $100 a pop for Freeform Pro, you won’t find me buying a license. It’s an add-on, and I don’t think it should cost 1/3 of the CMS system itself. Although, you can argue that time is money and that it pays for itself in development time/costs. Freeform Pro looks solid, but I just haven’t tried it.
My 2 cents

The guys over at Focuslab have a good article comparing the 3 major form add-ons for EE.

They’re basically all good, it depends on your and your client needs. Freeform may be expensive, but coding forms is no fun and it can save a lot of dev time if your site has several complicated forms.
