Is there a way to reset category id numbers (ie, bring them back to 1, 2, 3, etc) in the control panel?
Thanks.

Hey Gamiel,
Thank you for posting your question here on the ExpressionEngine forums.
There is no way to do this through ExpressionEngine, but you could truncate the table in MySQL. Not a nice way to do it I know, but it would work.

Hi Shane,
Yeah, I don’t know anything about MySQL so I wouldn’t want to try to truncate anything. I’ve virtually no experience on the backend (and I’m self-taught on the frontend). I’m learning everything as I go along.
As a newcomer I’ve been amazed at some of ExpressionEngine’s limitations; how seemingly simple things are either extremely complex or impossible. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the power of EE and I know that no software is perfect, but still…
Anyway, this is a problem I can live with (bigger ones are waiting!). Just figured I’d ask. Thanks again Shane. You’ll probably hear from me again…

Hey Gamiel,
Wish I could have been more help to you. I understand what you are saying and for the most part I agree, there are some things that ExpressionEngine should just do and we do not. But I think it’s a perspective thing to. This may seem simple, but it’s a limitation that keeps users from doing really bad damage to their install. ExpressionEngine uses those Category ID’s and if it were easy to reset the numbers on those, that could be pretty bad. But you point is well taken.
Looking forward to helping you some more in the future.
