Running 2.5.0 - Build: 20120507, after following the update instructions to the letter, I received the error described in the title. I have read over this threads and this documentation. This has been very time consuming. 
The troubleshooting explains that I should hunt down error in the db for this issue. I can’t find a can_search column in the db? I have rolled back to the older db and older directory, and everything is working; however, I really don’t want to go through another update, and have the same error occur. Thanks.

I completely understand your frustration, however, repetition is often the nature of troubleshooting and problem solving. Before we try again, let me get some more information about your environment.

Is your site running behind a proxy, cache or load-balancer? These can affect the update process if the requests made by the updater get crossed and re-ran.

Not sure what was causing the problem fin was experiencing, but we worked with him to make sure the site was updated and working smoothly.
