Hi all, just a general query here as this issue has popped up a couple of times with different websites I’ve worked on and I’d like to understand it better.

I’ve just closed down ‘Allow New Member Registrations’ on a particular site because of a large number of spam members joining up. My question is; where are these new members coming from? There is no new registration area of the website. I’m curious to know how they can find a page on the website that allows them to create a new membership?

    Thanks…

    Hello BP,

This is a common questions and a bit of a frustration.

This great Wiki Article explains how this is possible and how to avoid registration spam.

Basically bots that exist only to create spam accounts look for common profile trigger words like “profile” and then automate the registration process. It’s nasty.

Please give the article a once over and let me know what you think!

    Cheers,

    Thanks again Shane.

I’ve posted up another issue today regarding single entry pagination and how it appears to interfere with comment entries on automatically generated pages.

Not sure if this is within your area of expertise but here’s the thread link incase it is.

    Cheers,
    Ben
