I notice on the support forums at this site that I can view posts without having an account, even a guest account. How is this setup please?

    Best wishes

    Hi Lee,

You can set Member Group access permissions in the Control Panel. Add-ons->Modules->Discussion Forum and click the link for “Default Permissions” There you can set the preferences for the Guest Member group to however you like.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Cheers,

    Hi Dan,

I have Guest member group set as “Can View Forum” in the place you mention and on the individual forums. But I can only view a forum if I login as guest, whereas on this forum where we’re talking, I can view the forum without being logged in - how is that possible?

    Hi Lee,

How do you mean “if I login as guest”? Have you created a guest user on your system?

The Guest Member group gets automatically assigned by EE to *any* visitor to your site, no need to login at all.

Do you have the “Can View Posts” option set as well? Forums would be the individual boards, like Pre-Sales, Community Help, etc. Being able to view the posts inside of those forums is controlled by that option.

    Cheers,

I created a user in the Guest member group and logged in using that account. When logged in using the user account in the Guest member group I can see the forums.

    Yes I do.

Is there somewhere in the docs that I can read up on this?

    Thanks

    Hey Lee,

Not that I can find. It’s just the way ExpressionEngine has always worked and is the reason the Guest member group exists at all.

You can verify by placing this global variable, {logged_in_group_id}, in a template and visiting the site while logged out. It should return “3”, which is the Guest group ID.

Sorry I don’t have much more info on it that that.

If you remove the member from the Guest user account, can you view the forums as expected?

If not, we would like to get a look at this first hand.

    Cheers,

    I do.

    No, that’s the problem.

Sounds good to me, where do I send the login details?

    Best wishes

    Hey Lee,

The wise Lisa Wess clued me in to a bit of UI that seems we both have totally missed.

Have a look at this screenshot: http://d.deckr.me/IQUt

That link in the table header lets you set the permissions for the *category* the forum is in. Those have to be set for guest access as well it turns out.

If that still isn’t it we will come in for a look.

    Cheers,

Is there any way to allow guest to post?

I would like to have an open but moderated forum, where you can post without logging in. Maybe with a CAPTCHA.

    Thanks,

    /Bo

    Hi bsjosten,

It looks like Forum requires membership in order to post.

There isn’t a preference to allow Guests to post.

Why not? You can comment in channels as a guest.

It seems illogical to allow guests to comment, but not to post in the forum. To an outsider, it looks like a similar function.

Can you supply a workaround? Maybe a patch somewhere?

    Thanks,

    /Bo
