Hi Shane
Great news - I have managed to resolve the problem without needing to take up your kind offer of login-based help.
An EE veteran I know suggested checking the PHP versions in use on my server. It turned out that PHP 5.2.17 was the default on the VPS, but 5.3 was also available. I got the web host to upgrade and that fixed the problem instantly - no more php errors for the hash_algo() function.
The odd-looking paths seem to work fine, so I am leaving everything as it is and pushing on from here. What a pleasure it is to have my EE CP back - and I am looking forward to getting to grips with 2.5.2 in all its glory…
Many thanks for all your help - the forums are great source of ideas and discussion about this kind of thing, as it’s often a process of elimination until we get to the solution. Thanks again.
