    Hello,

    Apologies for posting this twice but not sure I posted in the right forum the first time. Last night I attempted to upgrade our company ExpressionEngine installation and, after encountering several database errors, decided to abort and reinstall the backup database and files. Now no-one in the company can log into EE or onto the site. By selecting the “forgot password” option we are sent a new password, but that one fails, as well.

    Hello,

    Last nite I attempted to upgrade to 2.5.2 and encountered several database errors. Not feeling confident about proceeding, I reinstalled my backup database and old files. Now Expression Engine won’t allow anyone in our company to log into the site or EE. It will allow users to reset their passwords but the new passwords don’t work, either.

    Please help!

    Did you back up the database and files before trying to upgrade?! If yes, then just reinstall the database and files and try it again.

    I reinstalled all the old files and database, but can’t get into EE at all.

    What happens after you try to log in? Any error messages, blank page, redirect?

    The first time we try to log in we get an invalid username error. Then if we request a password reset, we get that promptly delivered in our emails. When the new password is tried, nothing happens. It acts like it’s going to log us in, then just returns to the login page.

    Thank you so much for helping! I’m desperate!

    My next move personally would be to try to set up the site using the backed db and files on a different server to see if the behavior is consistent or not. Do you have any older db back-ups?

    We have one person who might be capable of doing that but he’s away. Are there any other suggestions we can try in the meantime??

    Update to my problem:

    I inserted the cookie clearing data in the config file as suggested elsewhere in this site and got a little further. On attempting to log in, I got this error message:

    “A Database Error Occurred”

    Error Number: 1054

    Unknown column ‘site_id’ in ‘field list’

    INSERT INTO `exp_sessions` (`admin_sess`, `session_id`, `last_activity`, `user_agent`, `ip_address`, `member_id`, `site_id`) VALUES (1, ‘8bcb2b16a25bca6eb226c779a9e50cff6c69a54b’, 1340386213, ‘Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:13.0) Gecko’, ‘50.46.147.35’, ‘52’, ‘1’)

    Filename: libraries/Session.php

    Line Number: 771”

    Does that help anyone to solve my question??

    I could really use some help on this, if anyone has more suggestions.

    It seems we have entered the dreaded ExpressionEngine Log-in Loop where your login just generates a page refresh of the log-in page. There have been several questions posted on this and I haven’t found a suggestion that works for us.

    Please advise if you are able!

    Ah, so you’re getting a login loop now? Have you tried adding the following to your system/config.php file?

    $config['cookie_prefix'] = "";
    $config['cookie_path'] = "";
    $config['cookie_domain'] = "";
    $config['admin_session_type'] = "c";

    Hey!

    Yes. I tried that and it did do something (see comment #7 above). Didn’t directly solve the problem, but it was nice to see *something* happen. I removed them when it looked like they weren’t solving the problem.

    Looks like your database got messed up. Do you have direct access to modify it? Do you have an older back-up of it? You’d want to look at the table “exp_sessions” and see what columns there are.

    One thing I wondered, after reading the wiki on reloading after a failed update, was that if I uploaded the backup database before wiping the one modified by the update attempt, it would cause problems if I then tried to update again. Would that have caused problems even *before* attempting another update?

    Definitely. You should delete the all the tables from the bad install and then import the backed-up database.

    That may very well be the problem. I will let you know if it works!
