On my site I will frequently have articles on a particular subject that span over several days. All of the articles on any one subject will have the same title, but will be differentiated by a unique sub-title. As an example :

    example.com/article/subject-a-day-one.html:

    <h1>Subject A</h1><h2>Day one…</h2>

    example.com/article/subject-a-day-two.html:

    <h1>Subject A</h1><h2>Day two…</h2>

    example.com/article/subject-a-day-three.html:

    <h1>Subject A</h1><h2>Day three…</h2>

By using different channel fields labeled {title} and {sub_title} it is easy to accomplish the appearance I am after. But it is difficult to manage in the CP since I can have several articles with the same title.

I don’t know of any way to put the “Day one…” “Day two…”, etc. in the H1 tag because it makes an ugly-looking title that breaks the line somewhere that’s unintended, and that has the “day” of the article with the same size font as the title of the aricle.

    Please advise.

    Thanks,
    MikeCJ

Is your main problem the inability to manage the entries easily in the CP because the titles are the same? If so, you might want to check out this addon:

    Hi Mike,

I like Manjo’s suggestions here. Zenbu would let you use your sub_title field in the Control Panel to organize your entries a little easier.

You may think of taking a different approach. Using the ability to span an entry across multiple pages, you can give the impression multiple articles, all contained in one entry.

The one caveat that I can see would be if you need an indeterminate number of pages.

    Cheers,

Thanks, gentlemen. The Zenbu suggestion sounds like it will probably work.

I’m okay with this for the time being, but I do have some general etiquette questions:

    1. I assume there is usually more than one way to skin a cat in working with EE. How do I indicate to support that I’d like to wait and see if somebody else has maybe a more applicable response before the thread is closed?
    2. How long do I wait for a response before I assume that my post is not going to get a response? And do I then start a new thread with the same question/problem re-stated in a different way?
    3. How do I indicate to support that the thread can be closed as far as I am concerned.
    4. If I have a problem related to a past thread, do I go back and try to open the thread or do I start over?

As I learn the ropes, I want to make sure I don’t get black-listed.
    Thanks,
    MikeCJ

    Hey Mike!

    1. I assume there is usually more than one way to skin a cat in working with EE. How do I indicate to support that I’d like to wait and see if somebody else has maybe a more applicable response before the thread is closed?

Indeed, that’s really the best and sometimes most frustrating thing about ExpressionEngine - ask half-dozen devs how to solve a problem, you’ll get half-dozen answers, all correct 😊

We really won’t close a thread unless you “OK” it, or it has come to an obvious conclusion. Sometimes we get that last bit wrong, but we are human and make mistakes.

If you would like to have more of a discussion, we can move threads to forums that aren’t in the active Support queue.

    2. How long do I wait for a response before I assume that my post is not going to get a response? And do I then start a new thread with the same question/problem re-stated in a different way?

If you post a question or technical issue to the Support Forums:
    ExpressionEngine 2
    or
    ExpressionEngine 1

You should receive an initial response within 48hrs during the US business week. Once you have an initial reply, we try to keep followup replies in that same window. Again, sometimes we fall short, but if you have an active request in either of those forums, you will receive a reply.

    3. How do I indicate to support that the thread can be closed as far as I am concerned.

Just say so. Or if you prefer to keep it open for discussion we can move it to Community Help or Development and Programming as appropriate.

    4. If I have a problem related to a past thread, do I go back and try to open the thread or do I start over?

Well, there’s really no way for you to re-open a request. If you find a thread in one of the Support Forums that is unresolved and fits your issue, you can respond on that thread and it will return to the queue. If you need to create a related issue to a closed thread, you can do that too and it will show as a new thread.

It is still a really good idea to give as much context and information as possible, either with a new or related thread. Having as much in the thread as possible is the best way to help us help you!

Please, let me know if you have any further questions. We are here to help, answer questions, give advice and banter. We really love what we do, and that’s not hyperbole. If we ever fall short, feel free to call us out.

    Cheers,
