Hi I’m hoping you can let me know whether expressionengine may be suitable for this project.

I’m helping a not for profit create a website where members can sign up, have some of the sign up details displayed on the site itself (grouped by two tags), (i.e. list of supporters’ names, qualifications, location), and the site display the number of supporters.

Optimally, the sign up form would also have the capacity to email a petition to a third party. For this feature we’d like members to validate by email and then an administrator manually approve the submission before it is sent. The same sign up form should also have a tick box for supporters to sign up to a newsletter via mailchimp or similar and/or notification of new blog posts.

Also, is it possible to have a play with a trial/evaluation version? I couldn’t find any details of a trial on your site.

It sounds like ExpressionEngine would be a great fit. ExpressionEngine doesn’t force you to work a certain way or impose limitations on your site design, structure, or content. So if you can code it, they will come, I mean it will work.

There are also quite a few plugins listed over at [url=http://devot-ee.com/]Devot:ee[url] that will help with some of the things you wish to do.

I think a good next step would be to see if you qualify for an Evaluation Copy.
