Hello,
I am considering recommending EE for a client - they will be publishing content, and from my personal site I’m not worried about that, here’s my question:
They want the site to be closed to the public, requiring a username/password to be provided in order to access the content.
Is this possible in EE out of the box, or will we require a third-party app, and if so, is there any suggestions so we can try to price this out.

They want the site to be closed to the public, requiring a username/password to be provided in order to access the content.
Not only is it possible, but ExpressionEngine can even sell site subscriptions out-of-the-box!
Have a look at the User Guide on the Membership Management and Simple Commerce modules.
