Learning the ropes here but out of curiosity, why do categories have custom fields? Wont it be easier to just use them with a channel that has all the fields?

Sometimes you need to add category specific information. Some possibilities:

    1. Custom page titles for category pages
    2. Category specific meta data
    3. Custom page headings - eg if your Category name is “Fruit” you could use a custom field to make your category page main heading “Fruit from around the world”
    4. General category text - sometimes it can be useful to include a description when viewing a category, or a list of categories
    5. Different category data for logged in users - you can use custom fields to show data to members (or not)
