Upgrade question

I was just running an upgrade to the recently-released 2.5.1 version and ran into a potential issue.

My FTP program merged the new folders with the existing ones on my server. Thus my third-party add-ons, etc., were left intact.  This would possibly be convenient except that I’m concerned about the possibility (either with this upgrade or future ones) where system files may actually be deleted for security or other reasons.

Is this a valid concern, or is it better just to do a “fresh install” each time EE needs to be upgraded by deleting the folders from the server and re-uploading?

Also, might I suggest a more painless upgrade process? The current process seems a bit “involved” and appears to require a fair bit of downtime.

    Hello Matthew81,

Thank you for posting your question here on the ExpressionEngine forums.

I believe the best route is to upload the folders after renaming the old ones and then uploading the changed files from the backup per this guide.

I hear you on the upgrade process. It could be much better. You can file a Feature Request and add your voice!

Is there anything else I can help with?

    Cheers,
