This question may be related to a resolved thread.

I’ve read the posts I could find on EE operating slowly, but I couldn’t find anything that seemed similar to my situation.
I have EE 1.6.9 installed and I have (another user but the same machine) with 2.5.0 installed (build date 5/7/12). I just recently installed 2.5 and I’m trying to set things up. It’s a live site but there is very little on the site. And I have only two template groups. One group only has about 4 templates and the other group has about 8 templates. I have but two channels with less than 50 entries combined. I haven’t added any add ons and it’s still taking horribly long to even modify a template. I opened one of my templates and simply checked the box that said to save it as a file. It took over a minute for it to accomplish that task after hitting the update button.

I’ve turned on the debugging tools but I don’t know where to see what is being done in order to get some idea of what’s going on and why it’s taking so long with every little action I take. The site itself runs fine, but even logging into the CP takes forever.

I opened one of the templates that had two lines in it. The name of the template was .doctype and I just checked the box to save it as a file and it still took over a minute to update.

This is only happening with the 2.5 setup and it doesn’t happen with 1.6.9 - that setup is running quickly enough and has a lot more stuff in it than my 2.5 setup.

Something is wrong and I don’t know how to fix it.

    Hey abjoy,

    Welcome to the forums!

This really sounds like a server side issue. I have seen this before.

Can you please take a look at the server logs? If the debugging and profiler show nothing I have a feeling system logs will tell you.

    Please let me know!

    Cheers,

Thanks for the response. I don’t know, however, where to find the server logs. I found the control panel logs but the only thing I can do with that is to click on my account information.

    Hey abjoy,

You may need to contact your hosting company if this is a shared hosting solution.

Other wise you can look in /var/log/*

OK. . . I am using a Dreamhost account. I have two accounts at DreamHost. One is for my church and the other is for me personally. I have been running EE 1.6.9 on the church account at DreamHost for several years (actually not 1.6.9 that whole time . . . obviously. But I’ve updated EE several times over the course of those years).

When I log into the EE CP for 1.6.9 everything flies. When I log into the EE CP for 2.5 with my personal account at Dreamhost (same server), everything is so slow. . . even the login is slow. So, I really don’t think it’s the server that’s the problem. But, I am on a shared hosting setup . . . as are most people like me.

    Hi abjoy,

We have not had any reports of 2.5 running slower. I am running several sites on 2.5 and they are pretty snappy.

Did you happen to run the Server Wizard before the install?

I really think that the system logs are going to reveal a few things. I am really surprised that debugging and profiler did not show anything.

Is there anyway you can talk with your hosting provider and ask a tech to just look that things in real time or grep through the logs a bit?

    Thank you,

I contacted DreamHost and asked them to see if there was anything they could tell me about the slowness. They responded that there wasn’t anything they could see that would cause slowness . . . but of course, all they could see was the website itself. They weren’t able to get into EE and see how the templates were responding, etc.

Because I have so very little on the site at this point, I was leaning to the problem being caused by including Agile Records when I first installed 2.5. I had tried to delete most of the things that I could see had to do with Agile but it was still slow. I spoke with my son about the problem (he’s a web designer - mostly of the inner workings of a web site - and he uses EE 2 and loves it. He too thought that it was more to do with Dreamhost than with EE and that’s when I contacted Dreamhost to see if they had answers for me.

Then I received notice that version 2.5.1 of EE was out and that it should be installed. So, I installed it . . . and after updating 2.5.0 to 2.5.1 . . . guess what!  My login is quicker, my template processing is quicker and things seem to be running as they do on 1.6.9. So, I’m left to wonder . . . If nothing was done with the server, but by updating EE the problem dissipated, then where was the problem? I can only conclude that the problem was with something in EE that got corrected when I installed the update - a very simple update process, I might add.

    Thanks.

    Hello abjoy,

That is odd. I am not sure what’s going on with this, it’s a pretty unique case.

I am glad things are working now.

If you need anything else, please just let me know by opening a new thread.

    Cheers,
