    Hi everyone,

I’m running version 2.3.1 of EE and am experiencing a weird bug that will temporarily cripple my website before returning everything back to normal automatically. On 2 separate occasions (that I’m aware off, however E is saying that my DB has ony been up for about 50 mins) my site has displayed the standard “Site Error: Unable to Load Site Preferences; No Preferences Found” text when trying to view the site and admin pages. I then tried looking up the database using phpMyAdmin and get the following error: Error SQL query:  Edit SET CHARACTER SET ‘utf8’;  MySQL said:. phpMyAdmin then fails to load completely.

After some time (varies from 5 mins to much longer) everything returns to normal without me doing anything. I’ve checked

My site is running a few safecracker forms for members to enter data on the front end. I am also using the WYGWAM field type for the admin to enter data into the back end. Server details are:

    MySQL
    Server: Localhost via UNIX socket
    Server version: 5.1.62-cll
    MySQL charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)

    Web server
    cpsrvd 11.32.2.25
    MySQL client version: 4.1.22
    PHP extension: mysql

    phpMyAdmin
    Version information: 3.4.10.1

EE settings (SQL manager -> system variables)
    character_set_client utf8
    character_set_connection utf8
    character_set_database latin1
    character_set_filesystem binary
    character_set_results utf8
    character_set_server latin1
    character_set_system utf8

If anyone has any idea what might be causing this issue that’d be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    James.

    Hi James,

This certainly sounds like trouble at the hosting level. It appears your database server is intermittently up and down.

Have you opened a ticket with your hosting provider about this?

    Cheers,

    Hi Dan,

Not yet, I wanted to make certain that there wasn’t any bad data going into the database via expressionengine first.

Is the fact that the issue seems to be resolving itself after a period of time why you believe it’s a server issue? (ie. if EE was putting bad data into the DB it would remain broken). Also, do you have any suspicions as to what it may be so I can offer suggestions to my web host?

    Thanks in advance,
    James.

    Hey Foundry Digital,

I believe Dan is pointing to the server because it is resolving itself after a time. I think your best bet is to contact the hosting provider and give them this information.

    Cheers!
