Are there steps involved in removing the MSM from a site install other than turning it off and removing the MSM files?

I’ve tried turning MSM off in the General Configuration in the Control Panel and the site seems to run o.k..  However after turning it off, the site link in the upper right corner of the Control Panel is no longer able to link to the site.  When clicking on the link I receive the following error:  “Alert! The URL is not valid and cannot be loaded.” along with a blank page.

In addition to removing the files, make sure you delete the site from MSM before you remove the MSM files.

Also, check /system/expressionengine/config/config.php and set:

$config['multiple_sites_enabled'] = "n";
