EE template memory issues with host

With a recent site launch, we’ve been having problems with Dreamhost killing page loads because of excessive RAM usage. They pasted us a few lines from their watcher script, and it showed some pages taking many seconds to load and using some 30mb+ of RAM. I couldn’t believe it, but upon opening debugging I do in fact see extremely large loads occurring. But I don’t know why.

Even on the simplest pages, such as a news detail page, the memory usage is 30mb. Disable tag is in use. With or without it, I’m not seeing a change in the load. As I turn things off and on in that template I’m finding that, out of the 30mb,

10mb is the entries tag pair itself
3mb is in the footer embed (solspace super search)

But that’s still leaving ~15mb+ of load just “there” without anything else on the page. I’ve also turned off the head, header, scripts, and anything else I could imagine using resources but nothing changes the issue.

I initially started caching the homepage and a few other larger pages, but as soon as I noticed even the most basic page was showing the same symptoms, I wanted to get official EE feedback. Thanks in advance.

Can you get me a complete template debug capture? From 0secs/0MB through to the end. Please include the template the the debug out put is from as well.

I would love to see where the spike occurs.

Hi Chris,

Just looking that template over and CE Image there… that is a great add-on, very handy. Also kinda greedy with the RAM. Especially the tag pair.

Can you run a test with the CE Image tags out, like take them completely out of the template, and let me know if the RAM usage drops.

Dan, Removing CE dropped it a couple megs. Still topped out at over 27mb, though.

Hey Chris,

This is really odd. It’s only using 8MB or so start-to-finish, but it’s starting at 12MB - which is bizarre.

I think we might ought to get a closer look. Be looking for an email from me.

A completely empty template starts out at 14,880,640 bytes - why does it do that?

Based on what I was told, EE templates carry a certain amount of overhead before the add-ons / modules start parsing out. We couldn’t really nail down why the site I was referring to seemed to be higher than others. In your case, your template is 15mb total, whereas mine ran up to over 30mb because of its complexity. The issue ultimately lay with the host, but it sounds like it can be common to see the higher starting points. What what reason specifically, I’m not sure.

Appreciate the suggestion!

We’re running our own dedicated server and have optimized mysql, apache and php.

I just don’t understand why and empty (completely blank) template would have a 15mb size from the get go.

Caching pages cuts the page size down tremendously but this 15MB overhead is just perplexing.

ExpressionEngine has a memory footprint even before processing begins - add-on can increase this footprint. Think of ExpressionEngine as the OS - having bits in resident memory - and templates as run-time apps - adding to the footprint.
