I would like to allow my client to style text in a text area field using the default formatting buttons. i.e to be able to make some of the text bold or italic and to add hyperlinks.

However I do not want them to add inline images into this text area. I am unable to remove the add image button.

Is there any workaround for this?

I am sorry to hear you are running into this snag.

There is no way to remove that. Because of some built in functionality, things break horribly when it’s removed. I hope that at some point it will be removed, but for now that is not possible.
