    Hello,

I’ve been asked if it’s possible to automatically email a username and password to a new member after they have been added by a site admin. (either one at a time or by bulk upload)

Anyone know of or done something along these lines?

    Thanks
    John

    Hey John,

This would only be possible if you wrote a custom extension to handle it. EE encrypts the password using SHA-1, so it is not reversible.

Between you and me, it is also very insecure to send passwords by email.

    Hello Epic,

Thanks for the response - I thought that would be the case.

I knew SHA1 is used to hash the password and would look at having a plain text field as well. I know it’s not secure; as is sending passwords by email but sometimes you cannot reason with customers.

Thanks for taking the time though.

    Cheers
    John

    Hey John,

I understand. If this were an absolute necessity, your best route is probably to write an extension that sets the password and then emails the user immediately. That would get around the need to store an unencrypted password.

Working with custom variables in email templates is not the prettiest process either. That is what I have been working on this week…
