I am curious how others handle situations where you want to include images which you already have as part of galleries on your site in specific places in posts, such as articles of various kinds?

Since the placement can wary from post to post, there’s obviously no way of doing it on the template level, but are there are add-ons that do a better job of it than just manually linking to the image? My main concern with the manual linking is that if the filename changes or the directory structure changes it will break the links, which wouldn’t be the case if I was including the image by using its entry number. But I can’t figure out a way to do that in posts.

I am still on EE 1.7.* and I use the gallery module, so I’d love to hear how others do it with this setup. However, since I hope to upgrade when the gallery converted becomes available, I am also interested in approaches for EE 2.* and galleries run through regular channels.

Thanks, some useful thoughts if I am ever able to go to EE 2.*.

Though nothing really applicable to using images from galleries inside other posts.

Take a look at the screencast here: http://ee-garage.com/nsm-transplant. You might be to modify this technique to work for you.  NSM Transplant is EE2, but there is a EE1 version which is pretty much the same called LG Replace.

Thanks, will take a look. Though it seems like it would still depend on me knowing what gallery a particular post needs to pull an image from when I make the template as opposed to when I make the post?
