Any recommendations for implementing an image gallery with 1,000s of images? Don’t really need upload capabilities (not yet at least), but tagging, searching, categories, descriptions, downloading, watermarking, etc. are needed. Don’t mind doing some heavy lifting but if others have experience and could grease the wheels and help me avoid pitfalls, it would be awesome.

    Thanks!

We’d be really interested on input specific to the latest implementation of SlideShow Pro / Director with EE 2.4.

    Thanks

SSP looks really nice! Unfortunately, Flash isn’t an option for this project.

    Thanks!

As the volume of images is so high my first choice which is Pixel and Tonic’s matrix is probably unfeasable (http://pixelandtonic.com/matrix/docs/image-galleries)

    2 options spring to mind:

    1. Create a channel called gallery, which you can apply categories,  searchable descriptions etc and use a tagging solution such as Solspace’s Tag (http://www.solspace.com/software/detail/tag/) you may as well add the facility to upload images at this point. You could then use EE’s built in image manipulation tools to handle automatic resizing, watermarking etc (which I think would be best for performance) or a plugin like CE Image. Plenty of scripts to force downloads.

    2. EE’s built in File Entries tag (http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/file/file_tag.html) should get you most the way there, again use it with EE’s built in image manipulation tools. Not sure how you would handle tagging with this one.

    Hope this helps

I would suggest you use Flickr to store|tag all the images, then use one of EE’s flickr add-ons or the Flickr API to display on your site.

Channel Images, as bluedreamer mentioned, is a good module to look at. Tons of features: http://www.devdemon.com/channel_images/
