Syntax error when using Members module

    Hello,

I’ve been trying to instantiate a member log in page, but keep getting an EE error page stating that I have a syntax error (attached image).

I’m using the code straight from the user guide (http://ellislab.com/expressionengine/user-guide/modules/member/index.html), it’s definitely installed, and have registered members, so I’m a bit confused as to why it’s not working.

I’m running EE 2.1.4 on a MediaTemple VE (Linux) server. I can provide FTP info privately to EllisLab employees.

    Thanks!

    Hi Nick,

Can you post your EE code please?

    Thank you,

    Mike

Also: I am running EE 2.4, not 2.1.4. My apologies.

    Hi Nick,

Everything in your EE code looks correct. Did you by any chance copy and past this from the EE docs? If so, can you delete everything and type it by hand and see if that makes a difference. I’m thinking that there might be a strange hidden character in the EE tags when you copy it that might be causing the problem. Try that and see if it helps.

I code with invisible characters turned on, nothing was there.

I hand-coded to be sure and I’m getting the same error.

I am still having an issue.

Any way I can get someone Ellis Lab to respond? This is holding up my progress.

    Hey Nick,

It sounds like the Member module is either not installed or missing some files.

Can you check your modules and see if that is installed? If it is, can you check the modules directory and compare with a fresh copy of ExpressionEngine 2.4 to see if all the files are there?

Please let me know how this goes.

    Cheers,

    Shane,

Thanks for the reply. I installed a fresh copy on my localhost (left) and compared it to the server (right).

I don’t see any missing files in the member module folder.

What is the next step to diagnosis?

    Hey Nick,

What I was looking for in the comparison is files sizes and perms. Files might exist in both locaions but if a file is 0 byts, it’s no good. Does that makes sense?

Please let me know what you find.

    Cheers,
