Hi all,

Just did my first expression engine installation. It didn’t go as smoothly as I’d hoped for.

I had problems such as….

Unable to connect to your database server using the provided settings.
Filename: controllers/wizard.php

I ran dbtest.php and everything connected properly in that, but I eventually got through the installation file when i went to http://mysite.com/admin.php.

If you have a look at test.jpg, you’ll find what I see when I first visit the website. This looks like something has gone completely wrong…. There are also other problems in the admin area (img2.jpg) and there are more missing images in the admin area itself.

I would like to create a new mysql database, re-download the expression engine files and try the upload again. It seems that everything is beginning to screw around when I start going into the admin area etc.

What would be the best way to delete everything from the current root level of my install? Is the best thing just to delete the files from the root level in FTP? Or is there a cleaner way to uninstall everything?

Any idea what I could have done wrong?

I am sorry to hear you are running into this snag. I would hope that your first experience with the installation was awesome. Did you follow the user guide?

It does sound like the install was not successful or that file permission are not correct and a few other items.

Assuming there is not data you care about, then proceed. If there is data you care about, backup now. 😊

To start over, go ahead and use FTP to wipe the root web directory out of all ExpressionEngine files and directories. Then re-upload. Create a new DB or drop all the tables in the current one and then start over.

Be sure to follow these directions here very carefully. Each step is important and getting file permissions correct and making sure that all server requirements are met is also very important. (Run the server wizard)

Thanks Shane, I had all the pre-tests working etc.

I’ve come to conclusion that it was because I was connected through a VPN tunnel when downloading and uploading the files. Probably a problem with my server. All sorted now though! Cheers.
