I upgraded to version 2.4.0 a week ago. Ever since then the auto-login feature has not been working. The checkbox comes up, but checking it does not have any effect.

From this and this thread, I gather this bug was supposed to have been fixed in 2.4.0.  Not so, as far as I can tell.  But perhaps I am doing something wrong?

    Hello Jules van Schaijik,

I am sorry to hear you are still running into this.

    Let’s diagnose a little further.

Do you see this after you logout or after the session times out?

I will be on the lookout for your response.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Shane,

Do you see this after you logout or after the session times out?

I’ll see if I can get more clarity on exactly what happens.

But I don’t experience the problem after logging out. For one thing, I hardly ever do so, and for another, if I did I would expect to have to log back in.

    I’ll be back with more

Okay, so yesterday I tried the following:

    - Close all of Safari’s windows, wait 35 minutes, and the go back to the site. That worked fine. I was still logged in.
    - Quit Safari, and wait for more than an hour, the go back to the site. Again, I was still logged in.
    - Then this morning—after 6 or 7 hours of sleep—I went back to the site, and was logged out.

Any other experiments you suggest, or information/settings I should look at?

    Hello Jules van Schaijik,

    Thank you for the information.

You were logged out after 6-7 hours. Good. And what about the check box? Was it checked or unchecked when you came back and were logged out?

    Thank you,

And what about the check box? Was it checked or unchecked when you came back and were logged out?

I don’t remember.  I think it is always checked because I changed the code from:

    <input class='checkbox' type='checkbox' name='auto_login' value='1' />

    to:

    <input class='checkbox' type='checkbox' name='auto_login' value='1' checked="checked" />

Should I change it back to the former before answering your last question?

Just now I was logged out for no reason I can tell.
I was logged in, working on a template and frequently checking the changes I made on the front end. In the middle of it I was logged out.

As to the state of the check-box in this case:
    - the one on the login form for the EE Control Panel was not checked
    - the one on the login form for the front end, was checked

    edit:

    It does work.
I just can’t keep the check box checked.
Maybe that is normal EE behavior. Opera does remember. FF and Safari not.

    Hi Jules and bottlenet,

I just tested this in FF and Chrome using these forums and Devot:ee - I logged in and then closed the browser and was logged in up on revisiting.  I do know that when I visit after going away for a few hours I am required to login again. Are you experiencing this problem at expressionengine.com as well as devot:ee or other EE sites that you own or is the issue specific to one site?

I experience it on EE, and on the website I’ve built with it.  I don’t know about Devotee.  I’ll try tomorrow.

Also, you say you are required to log in even if you leave for just a few hours.  I would like to stay logged in for much longer than that (until I log out, if possible).

I also got this problem, logged out after a night sleep (logged in using the cms de night before).

    Very annoying bug!

    Using v2.4.0 - Build: date 20120123 .

Is there a quick fix that I can do myself? We solve a lot.

    Hi avroo,

If you will comment on the bug report linked in my previous reply, you will be subscribed and notified on the progress. It would be great if you could add your story there as well. The more information the Devs have regarding the issue, the more thorough the fix.

This problem runs in the very Core of ExpressionEngine, so quick fix is not likely.

    Thanks so much!

    Cheers,
