Not sure to understand of what “documents” you are making mention, but a database backup is about MySql tables and the content contained into it, not a php/html file.

So if I want to make a backup of my sites database, what do I do?

Have a look at this module http://devot-ee.com/add-ons/backup or simply backup your database using PhpMyAdmin.

Hi Success100,
When the User Guide refers to your database backup, it means your MySQL database that runs your ExpressionEngine installation.
If you are unfamiliar with how to perform a database backup for EE, you can use the add-on that Studio Meta linked to. You can also contact your hosting provider and inquire about their backup policies. One more option would be to contact a member of the Pro Network for help.
I’m going to move this into Community Help, since a how-to on backing up the database is outside the scope of technical support.
If you have any problems with ExpressionEngine, please feel free to start a new thread!
Cheers!

Here is a little add-on that can make your life a little easier when backing up the EE database. It lets you dump the database from the CP.https://github.com/themusicman/Dumpee
