    Hi,

The title of my topic is maybe not so clear, so here is the situation :

    - I have a EE2.4 live on some server.
    - The copy of it on localhost for safer template editing.

But I need new set of fields, category, etc, and i’m not sure on the best way to “update” the live version.

1 - export/import ALL the database from local to live.
    2 - export/import ONLY the altered tables

And the paranoia question : as paths and db config files are ok on both sides ... what are the risks ? I mean, there’s nothing to really *config* the database update ?

Sorry if it sounds noob 😊

    Hi AndreiCurelaru,

This is a sticky situation, because you want to transfer *some* data and schema from the local install to the live install. The problem is that most means of exporting databases are an all or nothing situation. Going that route from local to live would result in losing content on the live site.

My suggestion would be to look for MySQL syncing tools that work on your local OS (Mac, Windows, etc.).

    Good luck!

    Hi Dan,
    Thanks for answering.

As you say, between all or nothing, i think i’m gonna take the first option and try that :

    - Backup the actual live mysql.
    - Create the .sql file of ALL tables and content from the local version with -MySql Administrator- or directly from PhpMyAdmin (I’m on Ubuntu 11.10)
    - Execute it on the live PhpMyAdmin.

    - Check to see if I have all 3rd party apps installed in the same way on the two servers, and images in the right folders.

    * Normally, as channels, fields, data and config are stored into the db, and the database.php is pointing to the db I’ll update ... it should work without much surprises i guess or hope. *

    I’ll try that tomorrow ...

    Hi Andrei,

Keep me posted on how this works out, and be sure to keep a working backup of your live site just in case :-D

    Cheers!
