Hi all,

I have a question about who qualifies for the Freelancer License. I have a friend who’s a writer, and I built a website for him a couple of years ago using the old EE v.1 software. I want to upgrade him to EE 2.0, and continue work on his site to build in additional functionality.

So, I’m not sure which license terms he falls under. Because he won’t be doing the development himself, does that mean that we can’t use the Freelancer license (since the terms say “no client work”)?

Also, a question about upgrading. His EE purchase will be an upgrade from the previous EE product (EE Core 1.6.8). Does he qualify for an upgrade discount? Or will he need to pay full price?

If it was your website you’re building then the Freelancer license would apply. As you’re making it for somebody else (the client) it’s probably not-so.

If it’s a personal website he may be eligible for the Non-Commercial license.

Core was the free version of ExpressionEngine 1 and so he wouldn’t be eligible for discounts as far as I’m aware.

Based on your description, the Freelancer’s license would not be a good fit. The intent of that license is for independent developers and small shops with 3 or fewer employees to promote themselves and their ExpressionEngine chops.

For your writer friend, to determine the need for commercial or non-commercial licensing is fairly straight forward. If your friend will be using the license to write a personal online journal as a means of self expression, then non-commercial will do just fine. If the site is intended to promote the professional writing of your friend or is in anyway a means to provide income (other than web-ads) then you will need to go with the commercial license.

Since ExpressionEngine Core was a free product when it was offered, there is no discount available. So the purchase of ExpressionEngine 2.x would be at full price, depending on the license, either $149.95 or $299.95. With either of those, you would be eligible for future upgrade pricing and technical support.
