We’ve developed a client EE site (latest version as of Jan 30th 2012) with quite a large database…in short, they client has over 300 products on the site and each product has a number of meta-data associated to it (price/size/catalog no./prod. name/full product name/ related product 1/related product 2 and more. We’re relatively new to using the search function to this degree and were wondering what recommendations are out there in both using what is out of the box with EE and/or any plugins to ensure search results are fast, accurate, and mostly, comprehensive (i.e. searching the whole db - SQL btw). Can anyone suggest a direction/old post/link to guide us here? Many thanks!

The native search is relatively simple to implement - I covered it in this post

But the reason it’s simple to implement is that it’s a simplistic search engine.  You can’t do much to influence results.  But it might be worth a shot to test and at least either run with or build a case for a more advanced approach.

I wouldn’t worry about speed against 300 products - I’ve used the EE search on a client site with >8K products and saw no performance issues.

awesome - thanks for your note…we have actually implemented simple search already but without documentation so should be interesting finding the quality of our set-up. Thanks again.

    Hello p2p,

As always, thank you Mike for posting.

Is there anything else that you need p2p?

    Cheers!

Well, now that you mention it… 😊 This is off-topic but for some reason I am getting this error msg when I try to look at my profile:

    Forbidden
The member’s profile you have requested is not visible to the public.

    Any idea?

    Hello p2p,

Is this a recent occurrence? Were there any big changes recently?

You are seeing this message when you view your own profile while logged in?

    Looking forward to your response,

Hi Shane - yes, I’m just scrolling up and hitting my own profile button. This is what I get:

    Forbidden
The member’s profile you have requested is not visible to the public.

I got an email from Marcus at EE asking:

When we log in as your user account we are able to access all portions of the profile just fine. Can you verify that you are having issues with this still? And have you tried another computer? or at least a different browser? We don’t limit access to Profiles unless you have been blacklisted and since you state that you can post to the forums I know you have not been blacklisted.

    *****

Indeed, I have tried a different computer and also a different browser but no joy - any idea on this?

    Hello p2p,

This is a strange one indeed.

Do you have access to phpMyAdmin?

Can you check the permissions across all the columns in the exp_member_groups for Super Admins group_id 1?

Most of the columns, if not all of them, should be set to “y” where applicable.

Just browse over those and tell me if you see any that are set to “n”

    Thanks,

Hi Shane, sorry for the delay. I think you may have misunderstood…this error is happening on the e-forum site…I can’t click on my profile. I don’t think there is anything I can do on my end, is there? Please let me know. This problem persists. Thanks,

    Hello p2p,

    I understand now.

You tried a different computer and different browsers.

Was the other computer at the same location?

Trying to determine if this is an IP based issue. What internet provider do you use?

If we can login as you on our end, then it’s something to do with the IP or the browsers.

I will be on the lookout for your response.

    Cheers,

    Hi,

Since you sent the message, we just tried it from a different office and received the same error. Comcast business is the internet provider we use in one of them. Not sure of the other. But I can tell you this >> it def. worked when we signed up from this location - nothing has really changed on our end. Super weird! What to do?

    p2p.

I’m sorry you are still having issues. I want you to know that when I log in as you (p2p) I can click on Profile and Control Panel and click through all of the various links there.

When I am logged in as my user I can also click on your name in the left side and go through to your Profile.

So the only thing I can conclude from this is that there is something on your side that is causing the issue.

When you click on that link does your IP address change? Can you tell me about your computer a bit? Windows? Mac? Browser? Etc.

I’d love to see this resolved. I hate that you are still having problems. I just can’t trigger it on my end. And you are in the right member group so there is not much else I can think of to fix this.

Sean/Marcus…apologies for the delay…just before checking settings to provide feedback, I thought I would try it out and…it’s finally working! NOTHING CHANGED!!! Same machine/browser but, now it is working…an act of Jobs? lol…anyway, appreciate your attention to this. If it comes up again, we will re-post.
