Publish page in CP loads very slowly

The publish page for one of my channels in the CP loads very slowly. On average, it takes about 30 seconds for it to load. Which is long enough to become really annoying over time.

The problem is specific to one of my channels—the others load much more swiftly. So I’m trying to figure out what might be causing this one channel to load slowly. Unfortunately, it’s the channel I use most often.

I have the playa module installed, and I thought that might have something to do with it. But then the problem should affect all the channels where I’m using Playa’s related entries feature—and it doesn’t. And I noticed the problem before installing playa.

Could the number of fields cause a publish page to load slowly? (That channel has 9 fields, including the title and title-url.) Or the number of entries in the channel?

Are there any other factors I should think about?

    Hi Alex Boese,

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this slowness. 9 fields should not be causing a problem. What are the field types being used on that page? do you have any other add-ons that may be interacting with the publish page? What version of EE are you using?

    Hi Sean,

In my fields I’m using 4 textareas, 1 playa, 1 text input, and 1 select dropdown. Also using EE v.2.3.1 build 20111017. But the problem has persisted through a number of updates/builds.

The only other add-on I’m using is MX Stop Spammers—but I doubt that would cause a problem with the publish page.

What it seems like to me is that it takes a while for the browser to get info from the database for that channel—which happens to be my largest channel. Could the number of entries/comments associated with that channel make the server take longer to deliver up the publish page? (I’m using Engine Hosting).

How many entries are you pulling through the Playa field?  I would try selecting “No” under “Show this field by default” under the custom field setting.  That way, Playa shouldn’t load the entries when you open the page until you open the Playa field.  Also I would consider updating the Playa setting “Limit entries to” something lower than “All”

Limiting the Playa entries seems to have done the trick. Thanks, Barrel! What a relief not to have to wait and wait and wait for the page to load!

    Alex,

Glad to see it’s working for you. Barrel, thanks for posting the solution.

Alex, Is there anything else I can assist you with?
